Regrouting Bathroom Tiles

Grout is essential for keeping your bathroom tiles sealed so water and condensation don’t get behind them and cause any lasting damage to your walls. However, over time grout can become discoloured and grimy, which can lead to it eroding and looking patchy between the tiles. No one wants to see their grout look unsightly every time they step into the shower!

Unfortunately, that could be the least of your concerns if your grout is eroding. This could also lead to damp and mould behind the tiles, causing the cement to weaken and increasing the chance of them falling off. Today we’re going to be telling you how to regrout your bathroom tiles so you can keep them fresh, clean, and safe.

Preparing Grout Lines for Regrouting

Before you get your tools out, you’ll need to make sure your tiles are properly prepared for grouting. Don’t worry, it shouldn’t take too long – but grouting over dirt and water will cause the new grout to not stick and dry sufficiently, essentially wasting your time.

Cleaning Grout Lines

Cleaning grout lines is simple enough with an old toothbrush and some household cleaner. If you don’t have any cleaner to spare, simply mix up some bicarbonate of soda with water to create a paste that you can brush over the grout to exfoliate it. This will remove as much dirt as possible and hopefully leave the tiles looking fresher already. You might even want to stop here, as this is sufficient to spruce up the grout!

Drying Grout Lines

This step isn’t always essential as you might be digging your old grout out anyway, so there’s no point in leaving it to air dry fully. However, we’d still recommend it as using tools over wet grout might cause you to slip and accidentally scratch or damage your tiles. So, leave the freshly cleaned grout to dry for an hour or so to make sure you can work on it without butterfingers coming out.

Step by Step Guide to Regrouting Your Bathroom

Now we’re ready to regrout your bathroom, there are a few tools you’ll need to get started:

Sponge

Grout rake

Grout (either pre-mixed or powder)

Trowel

Grout float

Epoxy Grout

Functionally Superior

Waterproof– Epoxy grout is waterproof unlike traditional cement grout that is porous. It alleviates water-proofing issues by reducing the water that gets underneath the tiles and watermarks and leaking

Durable- Our Epoxy sealant uses a chemical mix of two liquid components, epoxy resin and a hardener, to create a tough, solvent-resistant finish that is traditionally used to in industrial applications such as paint for Airplanes & Ships

Aesthetically Pleasing

Vivid Colors & a Consistent Look

Smooth Finish- Our grout has a smooth and luminous finish that is prettier compared to the chalky finishing of cement grout & is especially beautiful on the edges

Color Intensity– The colors appear more vivid as epoxy is opaque unlike cement and allows it to reflect more light

Choose Your Finishing

Semi-Flushed & Concealed

Our unique application technique enables us to apply a more flushed finish so that the grout doesn’t “pop” out.

FOUR MAIN TYPES OF GROUT

Below are the main types of grout used in tiling projects.

1. SANDED GROUT

Cement grout is available in two types: sanded and unsanded (also known as non-sanded). As the name implies, sanded grout is a mortar mixed with sand. This type of grout is ideal for grout lines wider than 3mm, as the sand content provides added strength to the joints.

Sanded grout is particularly suited for ceramic and stone tiles, which often have larger grout joints. Its durability makes structures more resistant to wear and tear, contributing to their longevity. However, sanded grout has its drawbacks—it tends to attract dirt and is highly absorbent. To counter this, it’s recommended to seal the grout immediately after application to enhance its resistance and maintain its appearance over time.

2. UNSANDED GROUT

Unsanded grout is a mixture of water, cement, and fine particles without sand. It is specifically designed for grout joints smaller than 3mm. Due to the absence of abrasive particles, unsanded grout is less robust and prone to shrinking when used in larger grout joints, which can leave the grout lines exposed.

This type of grout is an excellent choice for bathroom floors and walls, as well as for use with ceramic tiles and marble. It also pairs well with natural stone, providing a smooth, clean finish that complements these materials.

 3. FURAN GROUT

Furan grout is made up of polymers of furfuryl alcohol, making it resistant to wear, tear, scratches, and stains. It has a lot of similarities with epoxy grout and is also suitable for industrial structures.

It’s important to note that since it uses alcohol, no water is added to the mixture. Furan grout is best used in chemical handling areas since it has high chemical resistance.

4. EPOXY GROUT

Here’s our favourite grout! Epoxy grout is a premium mixture made from epoxy resins and a hardener, which gives it exceptional strength and durability.

Over the years, many tilers have favoured epoxy grout for use in industrial structures. Today, however, it has become increasingly popular in residential settings, particularly for creating stronger, more durable surfaces in kitchens, bathrooms, and tiled fireplaces, among other areas.

Epoxy grout is renowned for high strength and chemical resistance, making it a versatile solution for a wide range of specialist applications. Unlike other grouts where regular cleaning is necessary, the non-porous nature of epoxy resin does not allow dirt, grime or moisture to penetrate grout joints.

If your installation is subject to heavy wear or harsh conditions, Bostik epoxy tile grout is an excellent preventative measure, offering tenacious adhesion and stain resistance.

Our epoxy grout is impervious to staining and other forms of chemical or moisture damage. This means it’s ideal for:

  • kitchens
  • bathrooms
  • hygiene-sensitive environments like hospitals

Unlike traditional epoxy solutions, our grouts provide great workability while retaining exceptional abrasion resistance and strength. Our epoxy products also have an unlimited shelf life prior to opening.
